5 Potty Training Supplies You Haven't Heard About That Are Super Helpful

what gear do I need for potty training

what do I need to buy to start potty training?

I’m going to share some potty training supplies you probably haven’t heard about that can actually be SUPER helpful with potty training! PLUS, I’ll share the basics that you’ll want to have too!

First, it is SO important to know that there is no one magic mix of supplies or tools that will work perfectly for each toddler. Because your toddler is their own little human, they have unique interests, preferences, reactions to things, etc.

So the best mix of things for them, might not be the best for their cousin, your neighbor’s kid or mine.

Staying curious and flexible will allow you to adjust to the supplies that best suit your toddler (potty watch or no potty watch, sticker chart or incentive after, etc….)

potty training tools for toddlers you didn’t know about

1. toilet target color-changing stickers

Once you get your toddler comfortably sitting on the potty, these are one of those potty training tools for toddlers that can be SO fun for them!

As they pee on the sticker, it reveals an image! Animals, monster trucks, princesses, they have all sort of options.

Showing your toddler how they work yourself first, can help motivate them to sit each time they need to. (sit and pee on it yourself vs using water to pour on it, this way your toddler has in their mind that they use their pee to reveal the image, not a cup of water).

If your potty training toddler isn’t motivated by the sticker alone, no worries, some will be and some won’t. Here is an article that can get you moving in a forward motion EVEN if your toddler seems ‘uninterested’ (many show readiness and some interest, but not continued insterest. We can BUILD that continued insterest in the beginning, until they start to self-initiate sitting on the potty on their own!)

2.  foot stool to use when pooping

Many toddlers will struggle with things like fear or distractions when potty training, which makes them withhold poop and often times, get constipated.

You’ll want to pay attention to any signs of constipation and nip it in the bud as soon as possible, so it does not become a chronic problem. Always consult your pediatrician with constipation concerns.

If your toddler has had run-in with constipation before potty training, getting stool to place under their feet while they sit on the potty can help them fully and more easily release poop by putting them in more of a squatting position, which relaxes the puborectalis muscle more and straightens out the colon, giving poop a straight route out.

3. Potty time adventures activity box

Another great one to add to your potty training supplies list!

Having activities in the bathroom, that pique your toddler’s interest, and are designated for the bathroom only, is one of the key ways to motivate your toddler to sit with the peaceful potty training method. No need to bribe with candy, force or wonder what to do. You can help *build* their interest in the potty by focusing their interest elsewhere and slowly helping them learn the potty along the way.

I like to tell families – think of the bathroom as a doctor’s waiting room for the first few days of potty training. What do you do in the doctor’s waiting room? Wait. This is what we will be doing for much of the first couple of days with potty training, especially if your toddler doesn’t yet understand their body’s urges to pee and poop (we can help them tune into that!).

So, what will you do to keep interested and busy, while you sit and wait? Think of your toddler’s current play interests and personality when choosing the activities to set up, let them help too to make them feel involved and excited! And don’t skimp! This is a huge piece of the potty training puzzle that needs to be thought out and executed, especially if your toddler is uninterested, scared, giving push back or is usually hard to transition from one thing to another.

4. night light for nighttime potty training

When you take on the task of potty training (which I encourage families to do AFTER they see daytime mastery unless their toddler is consistently waking up dry), it will be so helpful if you have a designated ‘potty station’ in their room. An important part of that potty station is a night light, so your toddler can see where they potty is and have enough light to get to and from it, safely.

5. bedwetting sensors (for 5-7yrs+)

These lesser known potty training supplies are intended for 5-7yrs+ AND I highly encourage you to consult your pediatrician before choosing to buy these. Additionally, read all the labels beforehand, too.

Bedwetting up to the age of 7 years old is often considered normal. However, this top-rated sensor can even help those deep sleepers along to getting out of pull ups at night sooner.

It has vibration and sound, wraps to either your child’s arm or clips to their pajamas and clips again to the crotch area of the underwear, where wetness would most likely happen first.

If you decide to use this, it’s best to give your child a heads up and let them familiarize with how it works and the sounds it makes, during the day. Having them be a part of their entire potty setup in general, will help them get more comfortable with it.
